Men's Tennis Rallies but Falls Short to FAMU, 4-3
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team came back from 3-1 down but fell short against FAMU, 4-3 on Saturday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) opens the season with two straight singles wins.
FGCU falls to 0-2 on the season and FAMU improves to 1-3.
“Today was a really tough match,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “FAMU is going to have a great season when it is all said and done. Dean (Tsamas) and Lance (Lvovsky) both picked up great wins today. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us this year but the guys are ready for it.”
In doubles, the Eagles could not overcome early deficits as the team of freshmen Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) and Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) fell to FAMU’s Temuera Asafu-Adjaye and Takura Happy, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville) and Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) also lost 8-1 to Chidi Gabriel and Salif Kante at No. 1 doubles.
In the final doubles match, the match was stopped with FAMU’s Levan Clark and Fabrice Myrtill leading the team of sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and Moore, 5-4, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Moore came away with a straight sets victory at No. 4 singles against Fabrice Myrtill, 6-3, 6-2, and is 2-0 on the season in dual matches.
FAMU would win two points at No. 6 and No. 1 singles to increase its lead to 3-1 over the Eagles.
FGCU would pull to within one when Tsamas won in straight sets against Takura Happy, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. Tsamas won his service game to take the lead 6-5 when Happy was charged a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct giving Tsamas the set and the match.
Lvovsky would even the match at 3-3 after a straight sets victory against Chidi Gabriel, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 singles. Lvovsky had two breaks in the first set and broke his opponent to win the match in the second set.
The Eagles would fall at No. 2 singles as Levan Clark defeated Bao, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match for the Rattlers.
The Green and Blue will be back on the court against Georgia Southern on Feb. 4 at 12 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Results and recaps will be available on www.FGCUathletics.com after each match this season.
