FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named redshirt-sophomore Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS), senior Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park) and Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS) as the recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month award for the month of March.

Each month, the FGCU Sports Information Department and Athletic Academic staff will choose an Eagle as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Hansen gave the FGCU women’s basketball program its fifth first team (first unanimous) All-Atlantic Sun selection in program history as she followed up her second team selection last season by averaging a team-best 13.8 points and 6.3 rebounds and ranking second on the Eagles in steals (1.9) and blocks (17). Hansen, who was also named the 2012 A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year, also ranked in the top-15 in the A-Sun in six categories (points, rebounds, FG Pct., FT Pct., steals, blocks). The redshirt-sophomore has scored in double figures 21 times this season, leading the Eagles in scoring in 11 contests.

Hansen also earned A-Sun Tournament MVP honors after leading the Green and Blue to their first Atlantic Sun Championship in their first-ever appearance in the A-Sun Tournament with a huge 67-39 win over the second-seeded Hatters in the championship game. She finished with 16 points, three boards, three assists and three steals in the title game. Hansen also hit 6-of-11 shots from the field, including a career-high four three-pointers.

Daniel helped lead the Green and Blue to their fourth straight CCSA title in February. Daniel took home gold in the 1650-yard free with a time of 16:49.91. She also picked up a silver finish as a member of FGCU’s 400 free relay team. The quartet of Tanninen, Cadge, Daniel and Svensson clocked in at 3:22.26 for a NCAA ‘B’ cut time.

“Leah has had a truly outstanding career at FGCU both in the pool and in the classroom,” said head coach Neal Studd. “She won the 1650 free at the post season conference championship a perfect four years in a row! She won many other conference tittles as an individual and on relays. Leah never lost a conference swim meet in four years, leading to 4 conference postseason titles in a row, which is truly remarkable. She has a 3.5 GPA in Engineering, been a leader of our program by example and as a captain and will be remembered as one of the most successful swimmers in FGCU history.”

Forjet had a solid individual performance in FGCU’s season-opener against Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 17. Earning a no-decision in his first start of the season, Forjet turned in an impressive 10-strikeout, four-hit performance, allowing just one unearned run through his six frames on the mound.
