FORT MYERS, Fla. – After earning a comeback 4-3 victory against Belmont last weekend, the sixth-seeded FGCU men’s tennis team is looking to earn its first-ever Atlantic Sun Tournament win on Friday, April 20 in a quarterfinal match against the third-seeded Stetson at 11 a.m. at the Buddy Hartsell Courts in Johnson City, Tenn.

“I’m so happy that the guys have this opportunity,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “College athletics is all about postseason play and it’s an incredible accomplishment for us to be able to represent ourselves in the first year we are eligible as a Division I program.”

The Eagles (7-9, 4-5 A-Sun) earned the No. 6 seed after winning a 4-3 match against Belmont to earn the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bruins. The Green and Blue have enjoyed their best season since jumping to Division I in 2007-08 and have doubled their win total from a season ago. FGCU was ruled eligible for postseason play in all 14 of its Division I sports on August 12, 2011 after going through the transitional period the previous four years.

Sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) leads the team with a 10-6 dual match record and is 8-6 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) has a 8-8 dual match mark, playing mostly at No. 5 singles. Freshman Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) finished with a team-leading 5-4 conference record and is 7-9 in dual matches. Freshman Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) is 6-6 at No. 1 singles and was 4-5 in conference matches, including a victory against Stetson’s Maksim Levanovich, who plays No. 1 singles for the Hatters.

In doubles, Lvovsky and senior Matt Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville University) lead the team with a 7-9 dual match record, including a 4-5 mark in conference.

Stetson (16-4, 7-2 A-Sun) enters the A-Sun tournament as the No. 3 seed and is a six-time runner up, including a 4-2 loss in the championship match last season against ETSU. The Hatters defeated the Eagles 5-2 earlier this season at the FGCU Tennis Complex and hold a perfect 5-0 mark in the all-time series. Levanovich leads Stetson with a 15-3 dual match record and was 6-2 in conference action.

The winner of the match will play second-seeded #58 North Florida (18-5, 8-1 A-Sun) on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m.

Results and recaps will be available on after the conclusion of the match.
