FORT MYERS, Fla. – The student section in Alico Arena was in mid-season form on Monday night (Aug. 20). Over 3,000 FGCU students filled the seats in ‘The Nest’ as the athletic department helped them celebrate the start of the school year with the third annual Eagle Revolution.
Student Government, Housing and Greek Life all provided great numbers and FGCU community support to give the 2012 Eagle Revolution a record breaking attendance. With the attendance up over 500 students from last year, the Eagle Revolution is aimed to build student support for FGCU’s 15 Division I athletic programs while promoting campus unity.
Eagle Revolution is the culminating event for freshman and upperclassmen new Eagles fan group members. The FGCU fan group, the Dirty Birds, has a roster of nearly 1,000 members currently up from nearly 800 last year.
The event, which included music from South Florida’s Sekond Nature and was MC'd for the second consecutive year by DJ I AM of Party 101 Productions, kicked off with a VIP party sponsored by Moe’s and Jason’s Deli with a record number of Dirty Birds picking up the DB ‘Swag Packs’ which included the official 2012-13 game day shirt.
Azul, the FGCU Cheerleaders and the Dancing Divas all participated in the event along with nearly 250 student athletes giving out prizes from corporate sponsors provided by Self Insured Plans, Jason’s Deli, Beef O’ Brady’s, Jet’s, Tropical Smoothie, Pita Pit and Moe’s. Electronics, including an iPad and a 32-inch television, were provided by Best Buy. Follett Bookstore and Pincher’s provided gift certificates that added to the raffle prize count. More than a dozen students went home with prizes including items like FGCU ‘Protect the Nest’ Soccer Scarfs, a signed FGCU jersey and a pair of Beats by Dre headphones.
A couple highlights of the evening included the introduction of Student Body President, Peter Cuderman, and the showing of the Dirty Bird Video featuring Cuderman along with FGCU Basketball senior, Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) and the men’s basketball slam dunk contest, which was won by junior Jamail Jones (Atlanta, Ga./Montverde Academy/Marquette).
