FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU women’s soccer freshmen Shea Rhoney (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS) and Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) each earned weekly accolades on Monday following the team’s undefeated trip to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Tournament. Rhoney was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, while Brown was named Defensive Player of the Week by the league office.
This is the first time both student-athletes have received weekly accolades.
In a 1-0 victory against Tulsa on Friday, Rhoney recorded an assist on the game-winning goal and she followed that up with a goal in the 2-1 win over Atlantic 10 foe St. Louis on Sunday. Rhoney leads the team in points (8) and is tied for the team lead in goals (3).
Brown made six saves and recorded the shutout in the 1-0 victory in the tournament opener against Tulsa. Then against St. Louis on Sunday, she made five saves against the Billikens to extend the team’s unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). Brown improved to 4-0-1 on the season and lowered her goals-against average (GAA) to 0.70, which is second-best in the A-Sun.
The Eagles went 2-0 last week at the UMKC Tournament and currently hold a 5-1-1 record. FGCU sits at No. 49 in the Top Drawer Soccer Tournament 64 projection released on Monday.
FGCU will be back in action Friday when it travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. to play in the Northern Arizona University Tournament. The Eagles begin play at 10 p.m. EST against host Northern Arizona on Friday and then finish up Sunday when they take on UNLV at 1 p.m. EST.
