BURLINGTON, Iowa – FGCU men’s golf senior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) showed his veteran leadership in Monday’s second round at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge, shooting a one-under par 71 to lead a six-stroke team improvement from Sunday for the Eagles at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

Self’s one-under par 71 came on the heels of an opening round 82, as he was the key component of FGCU’s improvement from a 306 on Sunday to a four-man 300 on Monday. The Eagles are currently in 13th place in the 15-team field that features 13 teams ranked in the June 2012 GolfWeek Top 100.

Missouri (286-286/572) entered the day with a three-stroke lead and finished the second round with the same lead, but this time holding it over Wake Forest (294-281/575). Missouri put together its second straight two-under par 286, while the Demon Deacons made a jump from fifth to second place with a seven-under 281. Tulsa (293-287/580), Ball State (289-292/581) and Central Arkansas (302-280/582) round out the top five.

Self’s 71 moved him up 11 spots in the individual standings into a tie 54th overall. The Tupelo, Miss. product carded 13 pars, three birdies and two bogeys. Through the opening two rounds, Self has played the par 5s at two-under with two birdies and six pars.

“I’m proud of Jeremy for bouncing back today in a big way and I’m proud of our freshmen for stepping up in both rounds so far,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “I believe we are a much better team than we have shown so far, but we need to have everyone step up an show that on Tuesday.”

Freshmen Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) and Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) continued strong showings in their first collegiate tournament with counting scores of 75 and 76, respectively. Figueroa was FGCU’s low man on Sunday when he shot a two-under 70, one of just eight under-par rounds on the opening day compared to 20 on Monday. The Naples native did drop from a tie for fifth place into a tie for 13th overall in the 75-player field and is among the leaders in par 3 scoring (E) and total pars (23).

Sherwin is just four strokes out of the top 20 after a two-round scorecard of 74-76/150. After playing Sunday’s final 14 holes at one-under, Sherwin pared his opening four holes and ended his second round with a birdie on the par 4, 410-yard No. 9 hole, which has yielded just 11 birdies through the opening two days.

Junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) turned in his second straight counting score, improving by three strokes with a 78. Boesmans is in a tie for 68th overall after rounds of 81 and 78.

FGCU will play alongside former Atlantic Sun member Campbell and Xavier during Tuesday’s final round that will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 p.m. The Eagles, Camels and Musketeers will begin their round on holes 15-18.
