BURLINGTON, Iowa – The FGCU men’s golf team wrapped up its opening tournament of the fall season on Tuesday, finishing in 14th place at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge hosted by Iowa at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The Eagles concluded the three-day event with a team score of 308 to finish with a scorecard of 306-300-308/914. The 15-team field featured 13 teams ranked in the June 2012 GolfWeek Top 100 and six that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) finished up his solid collegiate debut with his second straight 75 to place in a tie for 15th in the 75-player field. Figueroa was FGCU’s low score in two of three rounds, turning in a 70(-2)-75-75/220 scorecard. The Naples native was among the tournament leaders and finished with team-bests in pars (36), par 3 scoring (+1) and par 5 scoring (-3).

Like Figueroa, freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) turned in a counting score in each round. Sherwin finished in a tie for 47th overall, opening the tournament with a two-over 74 followed by a 76 in round two and 79 on Tuesday.
