Volleyball Set to Open Atlantic Sun Play this Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast volleyball team will head to the ‘Peach State’ to open Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend as they take on Kennesaw State and Mercer.
The Eagles (4-7 overall) will face the Owls of KSU (11-4 overall, 1-0 A-Sun) at 7 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.) matchup with the Bears (5-6 overall, 1-0 A-Sun).
FGCU has six players that have registered between 35 and 75 kills so far this season, led by junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and sophomore Olivia Mesner’s (Boca Raton, Fla./ Spanish River HS) team-leading 71. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) leads the team with 116 digs (3.05/set). The setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) has run the FGCU offense, averaging 4.84 assists and 3.57 assists per set, respectively.

SCOUTING THE OWLS
The Owls, winners of two consecutive matches, rank second in the league in hitting percentage and service aces after hitting .260 against USC Upstate with eight aces in the conference opener. KSU currently holds a .215 attack percentage and has 80 aces on the year.
Setter Sara Metroka is coming off one of the best matches of her career, putting up 67 assists against Upstate while Turea Jones and Keyaira Stevenson each had 20 kills.
The Eagles hold a 5-2 lead in the all-time series over Kennesaw State. The last time these two teams met in Kennesaw, the Owls held the Eagles to a .020 hitting percentage as a team en route to defeating FGCU, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18).
SCOUTING THE BEARS
The Mercer is looking to extend its three-match winning streak and start 2-0 in league play for the first time since 1997.
Mercer's hot streak was punctuated by a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) sweep of East Tennessee State at Hawkins Arena on Tuesday night. The win was the team's third in a row and sent the Bears to 1-0 in Atlantic Sun play for the first time since 2008.
FGCU holds a 6-2 lead in the all-time series over Mercer. The last time these two teams met in Macon, the Green and Blue won 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-12) on Oct. 7, 2011. Then freshman Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) blasted a team high 15 kills and added 14 digs to record her fifth double-double of the season in the victory.
