Florida State Defeats FGCU Swimming & Diving, 173-122

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Swimming and Diving team was defeated by Florida State, 173-122 in the home opener at the FGCU Aquatics Center, Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles finished with five, first-place, eight, second-place and nine, third-place finishes against FSU.

“We had some great swims today from Julie Leth-Espensen, Eva Lehtonen, Jennifer Morgan and Megan Wolfe” said head coach Neil Studd. “We need some more people to step up and we just need to get back to work. We need to work hard every day.”

In the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, the team of freshmen Jennifer Morgan (Edmonton, Canada/Harry Ainlay HS), seniors Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/The Bolles School), Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) and Megan Wolfe (Sebring, Fla./Sebring HS/Daytona State College) earned the Eagles a second place finish with a time of 1:45.25.

In the 200-yard freestyle, senior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS/Florida) placed third with a time of 1:54.40. Morgan came back and swam in the 100-yard backstroke and finished in third with a time of 57.46

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Beaubrun, freshman Julie Leth-Espensen (Vanloese, Copenhagen, Denmark) and classmate Samantha Rahael (Trinidad & Tobago/The Bolles School) placed first, second and third, respectively with times of 1:04.81, 1:04.87 and 1:07.34.

Sophomore Blaine Small (Glenrothes, Fife, United Kingdom/Kelly College) and junior Jessica Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) had time of 2:09.85 and 2:10.07, good for second and third place, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly.

In the 50 yard freestyle, Wolfe earned a second place finish with a time of 24.18.

In diving, senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) earned two, third place finishes with scores of 242.24 in the one-meter board and 240.00 in the three-meter board event. Sophomore Taylor Malewicki (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Keeny) placed fourth in both dive events with scores of 211.12 in the one-meter and 236.33 in the three-meter event.

In the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breaststroke, the Eagles earned first place finishes from Morgan in the backstroke and Leth-Espensen in the breaststroke with time of 2:04.02 and 2:20.16, respectively. Beaubrun also took home a second place finish in the breaststroke with a time of 2:20.49.

Eva Lehtonen added two, second place finishes towards the end of the meet in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.28 and in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.08.

Also in the 200-yard IM, Leth-Espensen finished first with a time of 2:06.38, followed by Lehtonen in second and Rahael in third with a time of 2:14.51.

In the final event of the day, FGCU took home first, second and third place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of junior Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson), Wolfe, Beaubrun and Morgan finished in first with a time of 1:35.85. The team of senior Jamie Akenberger (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS/BGSU), Blizzard, Porter and sophomore Cassie Niles (Helotes, Texas/Sandra Day O’Conner) placed second in the event with a time of 1:40.93.

The swimming and diving team will be back in action Friday, October 12 when they host Miami in a dual meet at 4 p.m.
