FORT MYERS, Fla. – With just two games and one week left in the Atlantic Sun regular season, the FGCU men’s soccer team will look to continue its winning ways on Wednesday night when it hosts in-state rival Stetson in its regular season home finale at 7 p.m.

The Eagles extended their season-long win streak to four games with their 1-0 victory over ETSU on Friday night to sit at 7-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 (13pts) in A-Sun action. Currently two points out of second place and five out of first with one less game played than both first place Mercer (6-1/18pts) and second place ETSU (5-2/15pts), the Green and Blue can still win the regular season with a pair of wins.

Wednesday night’s showdown with Stetson can be seen for free via A-Sun TV on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com. Brice Zimmerman will call all the action from the FGCU Soccer Complex, while updates can also be found on twitter @FGCU_MSoccer. The Eagles have won the last two meetings between the two programs.

Freshman Felipe DeSousa (Vila Velha, Brazil/Wharton HS-FL) and the FGCU defense were the stars of Friday night’s victory over the Bucs. A native of Vila Velha, Brazil, DeSousa has scored the game-winner in the last three games doing so against ETSU in the 18th minute, while the youthful defense (3 Fr. & 2 So.) made the lead stand and have now posted shutouts in three of the four games on the current win streak. FGCU became just the second team to shutout ETSU this season.

The win on Friday clinched a berth into the A-Sun Tournament for the Eagles, while they also extended their A-Sun home win streak to 16 games, dating back to the end of the 2008 season. During the win streak, FGCU has out-scored its opponents 43-8.

DeSousa’s goal against the Bucs made him the second player in program history to register a goal in three straight games, joining senior Will Morse (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS), who accomplished the feat in September against Bucknell, Iona and South Carolina. DeSousa’s team-high six goals rank second in the A-Sun and are one off the program single-season record. Morse and sophomore Henry Penagos (Margate, Fla./American School of Boca/Delray) sit second with three goals each.

Battling for its postseason life, Stetson (2-4-1/7pts) currently owns the sixth and final A-Sun Tournament berth with Wednesday night’s game being its final conference regular season contest. The Hatters are one point ahead of Jacksonville and own the tie-breaker over the Dolphins due to a 2-0 win back on Sept. 7. Stetson coming off a 1-1 weekend in which it defeated North Florida, 3-2, and dropped a heartbreaker to ETSU, 1-0. Senior Kai Eckenrode led Stetson to the win over UNF, scoring all three goals to up his team-best season total to five.
