TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU men’s cross country team placed 20th at the 2012 NCAA South Regional hosted by Florida State on Friday morning. This is the first time that the Eagles have sent a full team to the regional.

Last year, only then-sophomores Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) and Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kirobon HS/Eastern Kentucky) competed in the race.

"The guy's situation is unique because you run 10,000 meters for the first time all year, an extra mile-and-a-quarter, so you really have to be careful,” said head coach Cassandra Goodson. “A few key people in our top five did not have a good day today. However; It's always nice to set a new school record."

Cruz led the Eagles when he finished in 64th place with a school record of 32:22.9 in the 10K event. Cruz’s personal best in the 10K previously was 33:34.4, set at last year’s south regional.

Senior Alexander Schilling (Dresden, Germany/Sportsgymnasium Dresden/Queens University of Charlotte) finished right behind Cruz in 69th place with a time of 32.37.2. Both Cruz and Schilling beat the previous record of 33:01.7, set by then Chemaoi at last year’s south regional. Chemaoi was the third FGCU student-athlete to finish when he came in with a time of 33:27.9, good for 115th place.

Junior Chris Rudloff (Ormond Beach, Fla./Mainland) and freshman Aaron Rojas (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) finished 119th and 129th, respectively with times of 33:33.3 and 33:46.0.

Freshmen Jean Deceus (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) and senior Dillon McGee (Indiatlantic, Fla./Melbourne HS) were the last two FGCU competitors to finish when they finished 132nd and 139th, respectively, with times of 33:47.9 and 33:57.1.

The 2012 fall season comes to a completion for the Eagles as the top two teams and top four individuals automatically qualify from the south region for the NCAA Chamionship, which will be hosted by the University of Lousiville on November 17.
