FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Julie Leth-Espensen (Vanloese, Copenhagen, Denmark/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) of the FGCU swimming and diving team has been named Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimmer of the Week, announced by the league Wednesday. This is Leth-Espensen’s first-ever CCSA Swimmer of the Week honor.
Leth-Espensen had a record-breaking performance at the Georgia Tech Invitational. She set a program and Conference record in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:00.68 to finish in second place. On day two of the meet, she broke the CCSA and Florida Gulf Coast record in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:15.32. Leth-Espensen ended the Invitational setting another conference and program record by winning the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:13.19. She also met the NCAA Division I “B” cut for all three events.
FGCU has earned three CCSA Swimmer of the Week and three Diver of the Week honors in just nine weeks and have won the most out of any school in the conference. Senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) has garnered Diver of the Week two times this season while sophomore Cayla Collins (Largo, Fla./Osceola) received the award in the first week of voting. Freshman Jennifer Morgan (Edmonton, Alberta/Harry Ainlay) and senior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS/Florida) have both received Swimmer of the Week accolades.
The Eagles will open up CCSA action January 5, when they host a tri-meet against Georgia Southern and Liberty at the FGCU Aquatics Center. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
