FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a vote by the league’s fans, FGCU men’s soccer sophomore Santiago Echeverri (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration HS) has been named the Atlantic Sun’s CRONS Achiever Award winner for the month of November after providing two game-winning goals that helped send the Eagles to their second straight NCAA Tournament.
Echeverri dominated the voting, accounting for over 60 percent (309 of 501) of the votes against the other seven nominees.
As the Official Motivation and Apparel Brand of the Atlantic Sun Conference, Crons sponsors the monthly "Achiever Award" to recognize what A-Sun fans deem the most notable performance from each month. The vote takes place monthly on the A-Sun Insider blogspot.
FGCU’s run to its third straight A-Sun regular season crown and second consecutive A-Sun Tournament title was sparked by the heroics of the sophomore. Echeverri’s first game-winning goal of the month came in the regular season finale at Mercer, which featured the league’s top two teams in the standings and decided who would play host to the A-Sun Tournament. In the 51st minute, the 5-foot-3 Echeverri provided his first career game-winner as the Eagles defeated the Bears, 1-0, to clinch the home field advantage in the conference postseason tournament. He was later named the A-Sun Player of the Week.
Echeverri struck again in the A-Sun championship game, which, again, stacked FGCU against Mercer. Again Echeverri’s game-winner broke a scoreless tie, but this time came in the 95th minute of overtime and clinched another NCAA Tournament berth for the six-year old program.
Named the A-Sun Tournament MVP following his goal in the title game, Echeverri finished a breakout sophomore campaign second on the team with 10 points on three goals and a team-high four assists.
