FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s swimming and diving team will return home Wednesday to take on Florida Atlantic in a non-conference dual meet at the FGCU Aquatics Center at 6 p.m.
The Eagles are 7-2 this season with non-conference victories coming against Miami, Georgia Tech, North Dakota and FIU. All-time, FGCU is 7-2 against FAU in dual meets, with its only two losses coming in its first two meeting against the Owls.
The Green and Blue recently defeated FIU 168-130 in a dual meet in Miami, Fla. on January 19.
FGCU is ranked No. 10 in the second edition of the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Swimming Poll and is the only team in the CCSA ranked in the Top 25. The Eagles were ranked No. 8 in the first edition of the poll. The Green and Blue were also ranked No. 44 in the top 100 fall performances, conducted by CollegeSwimming.com in late December.
Since joining the CCSA in 2007, the Eagles are 23-1 in conference action with its only loss coming at the hands of Georgia Southern back on Jan. 19, 2008.
FAU comes into the FGCU Aquatics Center with a dual meet record of 0-2 with losses coming at the hands of Denver and Florida. The Eagles competed against the Owls earlier this season at the All-Florida Invitational where FGCU took third and FAU placed fifth.
The Green and Blue has earned five CCSA Swimmer of the Week and three Diver of the Week honors in just 13 weeks and have won the most out of any school in the conference. Senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) has garnered Diver of the Week two times this season while sophomore Cayla Collins (Largo, Fla./Osceola) received the award in the first week of voting. Sophomore Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) has garnered Swimmer of the Week, in each of the last two weeks while freshmen Jennifer Morgan (Edmonton, Alberta/Harry Ainlay), Julie Leth-Espensen (Vanloese, Copenhagen, Denmark/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) and senior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS/Florida) have all received the award this year.
In the victory over FIU on January 19, the Eagles used 12 first-place finishes highlighted by Svensson and Leth-Espensen each collected three individuals victories. Svensson was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won, while Leth-Espensen was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that took first. Junior Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista) was the only other Eagle to pick up an individual first-place finish. Meeder took first in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:04.48. Meeder also added a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:29.98. Lehtonen chipped in two second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.71) and 200-yard butterfly (2:07.79) events while Morgan added points with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.54) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.08). In diving, Butler and Collins both collected second and third-place finishes, respectively, on both the one-meter and three-meter board events.
