FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding a program record four-game double-double streak, FGCU men’s basketball senior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) has been named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, announced by the league office late Tuesday morning.
Heading into FGCU’s game against Stetson which is the A-Sun/CSS Friday Night Game of the Week, Brown is averaging 20.0 points and 10.5 rebounds over his last four games, highlighted by the aforementioned four straight double-doubles, while making 14-of-30 from three-point land.
The weekly award is the second earned by Brown this season from the league office, making him the first player in the league to earn the award multiple. The 6-foot-4 wing has also earned the A-Sun Player of the Week award twice from College Sports Madness.
Brown’s most recent double-double came this past Saturday when he led FGCU to a convincing win over A-Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky, scoring a career-high 29 points in 29 minutes of work. The Orlando, Fla. product scored 16 of his 29 points in the first half, and, for the game, made 11-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. He also added a team-high 10 rebounds.
The 20-point game against NKU was the second in a row and fourth of the season for Brown, who started his week with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Lipscomb. Brown is one of four players in the A-Sun to rank in the top 10 in scoring (15.1/7th) and rebounding (6.1/8th), both of which are team-highs. He is just 15 points away from being the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
The 11th all-time meeting between FGCU (13-8, 5-3 A-Sun) and Stetson (9-10, 6-2 A-Sun) will start at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles are just a game behind first place Stetson in the A-Sun standings, as the Green and Blue will carry a 10-1 record at Alico Arena into the contest.
Matt Stewart (P-B-P) and Sonny Smith (Analyst) will have the call for Friday’s game against Stetson on CSS. The duo called both games in 2011-12 in which the teams split the season series, winning on each other’s home court and combining to average 171.5 points per game with neither team being held below 80 points. The Feb. 22 meeting in DeLand, Fla. will also be aired on CSS.
