FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team will get its first chance to play in front of its home fans this weekend when it welcomes in Troy and SMU for a pair of dual matches. FGCU will face off against Troy Friday at 1 p.m. before hosting SMU in a Saturday night match starting at 6 p.m.
Although they’ve had almost two weeks off from game action, the Eagles will enter Friday’s showdown with the Trojans with plenty of momentum. In its final match of its three-day weekend at Florida State to open the championship season, FGCU rallied to defeat FAMU, 4-3, on a three-set final point from junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) at No. 4 singles.
Both FGCU and Troy currently stand at 1-2 on the season, as both squads have played a pair of matches against ranked teams. The Eagles took on then-No. 32 Florida State and No. 73 UAB, while the Trojans followed a season-opening win against Presbyterian by taking on No. 42 UNC Wilmington and No. 21 Auburn.
Saturday’s night match against SMU will be the second year in a row the Eagles have played as the sun sets, as it looks to draw a record. Admission to the match is free. The Mustangs have also played a challenging schedule thus far, taking on the likes of No. 15 Baylor, No. 23 Texas and No. 26 Texas A&M. FGCU and SMU met last season at the FGCU Tennis Complex with the Mustangs prevailing, 6-1.
Injuries forced head coach C.J. Weber to make adjustments to the lineup over the season-opening weekend in Tallahassee, but the Eagles were still able to post a 6-6 singles mark following their match against FSU. Junior Dean Tsamas Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) led the way with 2-1 records. Tsamas was named the A-Sun Player of the Week following the three matches with his wins coming at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup.
