@FGCU_WSoccer Signs National Caliber Group for 2013 Class

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team signed five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent after the opening of the national signing period.  The Eagles have added Lauren Knight, Ashley Parks, transfer Paulina Speckmaier, Tabitha Tindell, and Yazmin Velez. 

“Im excited about this group, they are very talented and super athletic,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “All have been successful at a high level and are expected to step in and help continue with our success.”

Lauren Knight, an outside midfielder/forward from O’Fallon, IL attends O’Fallon Township H.S.  Knight is a member of the USYS 1995 Region II Team and was an invitee to the US National Training Camp in Pomona, CA.  She has also been invited to attend the 2013 ECNL ID Camp (Wisconsin), made the All-Region Team (2010) & 1st Team All-Conference (2013) and has been an impact player of the girls varsity team at O’Fallon since her freshman year. 

Ashley Parks is another midfielder/forward and hails from Wildwood, MO.  Parks attends Lafayette H.S. and is a four year letter winner, being named team captain her senor year. Parks was also a member of the USYS Region II Team as well as Missouri State ODP Team.  In her junior campaign, she tallied 21 points and received All-Conference First Team and All-Region Second Team honors. Parks was a member on her region II Olympic Development team

Paulina Speckmaier transferred to FGCU from the University of Florida after her first semester with the Gators.  She did not appear in any matches for the Gators and left the team in October. Speckmaier is from Miami, FL and attended Gulliver Prep. 

Tabitha “Tabby” Tindell is a forward and comes to FGCU from Trinity Catholic School in Ocala, FL.  The Ocala, FL native has been a four-year starter on the varsity squad for Trinity and has tallied 160 goals and 80 assists over her four-year high school career.  As only a sophomore, Tindell led the county with 44 goals and 40 assists for a staggering points tally of 128 on the season and in her senior season led her team to the FHSAA 2A State Championship notching a hat trick in the final. The 2013 title was the first State Championship Trinity Catholic had ever won.

Yazmin Velez is a defender/midfielder from Venice, FL and attends Venice H.S.  As a member of the 1995 Florida ODP Team, Velez has traveled to Montevallo, AL for the Region III Olympic Development Camp and has been selected as a member of the USYS Region III Olympic Development Team.  She was also invited to travel with the Region III Team to play in the 2012 Interregional Games this past November in Boca, FL.

The women’s team will open up the 2013 spring season when it travels to Tampa, Fla. to play UCF Saturday, February 23, at 1 p.m.
