FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team (12-5) is headed out west to California to play a total of seven games in five days on the west coast as they will face off against St. Mary’s before participating in the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic.

The road trip will include nearly 7,000 miles traveled, to and from Fort Myers, and will include a total of seven games from March 6-10, including two doubleheaders.

FGCU is coming off of a solid performance at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. in which the Eagles made their presence felt with strong pitching and big hitting. After taking four of five at the three-day event, FGCU improved to 12-0 this season when scoring five or more runs.

2013 A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) was named A-Sun Player of the Week on March 4 for her performance the weekend before in Clearwater which included three home runs and 13 RBI.

To kick off their time in California, the Green and Blue will be in Moraga, Calif. on Wednesday, March 6 for a twin billing with St. Mary’s (4-9) that is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. EST.

One year removed from winning the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Coastal Division title, St. Mary’s was picked to finish fourth in the PCSC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. St. Mary’s PCSC Coastal Division Pitcher of the Year Jessica Lemmon, All-PCSC first team outfielder Brittany Sabatini and All-PCSC honorable mention infielder Christine Torrise return this season for the Gaels.

After the St. Mary’s doubleheader, FGCU will have a day off in the bay area before competing in the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic in Palo Alto, Calif. The event will run from March 8 through March 10 and include participants Pacific, Minnesota and No. 18 Stanford in addition to FGCU with all games being played at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.

The Green and Blue will face both Pacific and Stanford two times each during the first two days of the event on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, followed by a meeting with Minnesota on Sunday, March 9 to wrap up their time on the west coast.

Pacific is off to a 13-6 start in 2013 after having been selected to finish third in the race for the Big West Championship by the league’s coaches. Pacific senior All-American Nikki Armagost was named to the “Watch List” for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America for the second-straight season and is hitting .286 with 17 RBI through 19 games this season.

No. 18 Stanford (17-5) will play host to the Louisville Slugger Classic in Palo Alto which will give FGCU additional experience in true road games against a strong opponent. When the Eagles face the Cardinal, both squads will bring their big bats as the two teams have combined for 10 run-rule victories in 2013, four for the Green and Blue. FGCU is 1-3 all-time against teams with a ranking between 16 and 25 at the time of the meeting.

FGCU will get a second shot at a Minnesota team (10-7) which it faced on Feb. 22 at the LaQuinta Inn at the Airport Spring Break Invitational in Fort Myers with the Golden Gophers taking the contest 3-0 behind a one-hitter from pitcher Sarah Moulton who has now won back-to-back Big Ten Pitcher of the Week awards. The Eagles will look to make an impact offensively the second time around regardless of who they are facing in the circle on Sunday afternoon.

FGCU will kick off the Stanford Lousiville Slugger Classic on Friday, March 8 by taking on Pacific at 5:30 p.m. and No. 15 Stanford at 7:45 p.m. For information on the Stanford Louisville Classic, including game times and ticket information, visit the Louisville Slugger Classic Central.
