Junior CHASE FIELER equaled a career-high with 22 points and sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON scored all 18 of his points in the final 12:53 as second-seeded FGCU defeated seventh-seeded UNF, 73-63, Wednesday afternoon in the A-Sun quarterfinals. • Fieler’s third 20-point game of the year came on 8-of-15 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three, and he also added a game-high nine rebounds. • With FGCU holding a one possession lead, 59-56, with 6:24 to play, Thompson took over the game with a personal 9-0 run to give the Eagles their largest lead of the game (12), 68-56, with two minutes to play. Thompson’s 9-0 run was the tail end of 14 consecutive points by the league’s Defensive Player of the Year who hit 5-of-7 from the field and all five free throws during the 6:33 span.

Also led by a second-year head coach in Casey Alexander, third-seeded Stetson is making its first A-Sun Tournament appearance since 2009. The Hatters finished the regular season with a 11-7 A-Sun mark. Stetson trialed at the half in the quarterfinals against ETSU, but out-scored the Bucs 46-22 in the final frame. A-Sun All-Conference forward Adam Pegg and guard Chris Perez give the Hatters a lethal inside-out combo that is the top scoring tandem in the A-Sun at 30.7 points per game. Pegg, who is sixth in the A-Sun in scoring (15.6), has reached double figures in 27 of 29 games played. One of the two times he’s been held to less than 10 points was against FGCU on Feb. 22. Perez is right behind Pegg at 15.1 points, good for seventh in the A-Sun.
ALL-TIME AGAINST STETSON
FGCU has taken five of the last seven meetings in the series, but Stetson took the last with a 80-71 victory in DeLand on Feb. 22 to split the season series. The winning team has scored 80+ points in the last four meetings while the all-time series is even at 6-6. Out of the 12 meetings, 10 have been decided by 10 points or less.
HOLD ON TIGHT
Friday night’s game showcases the top two scoring teams in the Atlantic Sun, as FGCU’s 72.7 points per night lead the way followed by Stetson’s 70.7 average. The two teams have a combined six players - three each - in the A-Sun’s top 20 scoring leaders, including four in the top 10. FGCU (3) and Stetson (4) are also two of the three teams in the A-Sun with three or more players averaging double figures. The Eagles have scored 70+ points in 15 of the last 19 games and are 6-0 when reaching the 80-point plateau. The two teams are also competing for the league’s top field goal percentage with Stetson’s even 46.0 percent slightly ahead of FGCU’s 45.9 percent clip. Under head coach ANDY ENFIELD, the Eagles are averaging 84.8 points per game (4 contests) against the Hatters.
SUNSHINE STATE SUCCESS
Out of the 13 Division I schools in the state of Florida, the Eagles (22-10) trail No. 9 Florida (24-5) and No. 6 Miami (23-6) for the most wins. FGCU is 8-0 against Division I teams from Florida, including one of Miami’s six losses.

FGCU leads the A-Sun in scoring at 72.7 points per game thanks to being one of three teams to have three or more players average double figures. Senior SHERWOOD BROWN (15.2), sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON (14.2) and junior CHASE FIELER (12.2) are the second-highest scoring trio in the A-Sun at 41.6 points behind Pegg, Perez and Graham of Stetson at 42.2 points per.
• Combined for 54 points in the A-Sun quarterfinal win over UNF, equaling a season-high that also came against the Ospreys on Jan. 31 and vs. Stetson on Jan. 25.
• Trio has reached double figures in the same game 14 times, including four of the last five.

Armed with length and athleticism - traits important to head coach ANDY ENFIELD’S defensive scheme - FGCU leads the A-Sun and ranks 18th in the nation at 9.0 steals per contest. FGCU forces a league-high 16.1 turnovers per game and is a perfect 12-0 when holding teams to 60 points or less.
• The Eagles have posted double-digit steals in 16 games this season, going 13-3 in those outings.
• Led by sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON’S 91 steals that are the second-most in the country, three FGCU players rank in the top eight in the A-Sun in thefts per game.
• In 64 games under Enfield, FGCU has 567 steals.
• In FGCU’s last six wins, teams are averaging 52.3 points.

Highlighted by his 18 points in the final 12:53 against UNF in the A-Sun quarterfinals, sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON (BT) has put on his cape in the second half several times this year, scoring double figures in the final 20 minutes nine times, including four of the last six.

Seven different players registered a block in FGCU’s 67-43 win over ETSU, helping the club set a program record with 13 blocks. The 13 blocks vaulted FGCU into second in the A-Sun (3.8), as it also leads the league in steals (9.0). Junior CHASE FIELER and sophomore ERIC MCKNIGHT rank second and fifth, respectively, in the A-Sun while their combined 82 blocks are more than 97 Division I programs, including Michigan, Creighton, Butler, Oklahoma and Boston College.
