FORT MYERS, Fla. – The first team to punch its ticket to the 2013 NCAA Tournament thanks to winning the Atlantic Sun Tournament, the FGCU men’s basketball team earned the No. 25 spot in the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll released on Monday evening.

The Eagles, who have received votes in the poll several weeks this season, cracked the top 25 for the first time in program history with 50 votes. Second-year head coach Andy Enfield was also featured by the media outlet in a podcast recorded Saturday night following the team’s 88-75 win over Mercer in the A-Sun Championship game. The podcast can be found on www.CollegeInsider.com.

FGCU, who is in just its second year of Division I postseason eligibility, will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 24-10 record, a five-game win streak and victories in 12 of its last 14 contests. The Eagles are in the top 100 of the RPI by six different media outlets, ranking as high as No. 92. The Eagles will learn their destination and opponent on Sunday at 6 p.m. during the NCAA Selection Show on CBS.

At the A-Sun Tournament, FGCU put together three straight double figure wins as the No. 2 seed, culminating with the aforementioned win over No. 1 seed and tournament host Mercer in the championship seen on ESPN2. The top scoring team in the A-Sun (73.1 ppg), the Eagles were firing on all cylinders, averaging 77.7 points while committing less than 10 turnovers per game at the tournament. FGCU’s 88 points were the most scored against Mercer this season, who is the top defensive team in the A-Sun.

Sophomore Brett Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS), who had 20 points in the 2012 A-Sun final, scored 21 points in the championship against Mercer en route to being the Tournament MVP. A-Sun Player of the Year Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) also earned a spot on the A-Sun All-Tournament team, while junior Chase Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS), who was an All-Conference second team choice, joined the duo on the All-Tournament squad.
