FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team (7-3, 2-0 A-Sun) jumped ahead early on A-Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky and never looked back as the Eagles shutout the Norse, 7-0, at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
“I am glad that we were able to sweep today as this is the ultimate in Division I tennis,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I am looking to see us continue to build on our wins on the doubles courts.”
The host Eagles used the victory to remain perfect in conference competition through two matches, along with improving to 4-1 through their last five matches, all of which have been played at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
35 minutes into the match, Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) completed a dominant 8-0 doubles victory in the third spot. The other two FGCU doubles pairs, Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) in the first spot, and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Johanna Sterkel (Schwtzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) in the second spot, both took care of business by each winning 8-1 to put FGCU up 1-0 after clinching the doubles point.
For the second straight match the Eagles seized the doubles point from their opponent and swept all three doubles matches for the first time on the 2013 dual match season.
FGCU jumped out 2-0 over the Norse after Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) took her match once her opponent retired from the match because of an injury after Mandic took the first set 6-0.
In decisive fashion, the Green and Blue won four singles matches 6-0, 6-0 in straight set sweeps to exert their power over the visitors. Sarah Means, Johanna Sterkel, Elizabeth Means and Bettina Botha were the four Eagles to overpower their opposition on the singles courts.
The seventh point of the day for FGCU came in the fourth spot as Morgan Bechtel won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to complete the sweep for the Eagles over the Norse.
FGCU will step out of league play on Sunday, March 17 at noon to take on Wisconsin Green Bay at the FGCU Tennis Complex to close out a six-match home stand for the Green and Blue. Admission to all matches at the FGCU Tennis Complex is free.
