TAMPA, Fla. – With the help of 13 hits and 13 walks, the No. 26 FGCU baseball team was able to push across 13 runs to take down BIG EAST foe USF, 13-5, in a mid-week contest Tuesday night at the USF Baseball Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

The Eagles move to 16-5 on the year while USF moves to 13-12. FGCU improves the all-time series against the Bulls to 6-1 and their overall road record to 8-3.

The Bulls jumped out in front early with a run in the first. Kyle Teaf led off the inning with a walk, followed by a hit by pitch to Alex Mendez. James Ramasay then flew out to right field to move Teaf to third. With runners on the corners, Jimmy Falla hit a sacrifice fly-out to centerfield to score Teaf from third.

USF added two more in the bottom half of the second to take a 3-0 advantage. Luke Manglich started the inning with a single to left field followed by a walk to Buddy Putnam. Zac Gilcrease then hit a sacrifice bunt to third base to move both runners into scoring position. With one out, Teaf hit a double to deep left field to plate both runners.

The Eagles got on the board in the fourth when sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) led off the inning with a triple into the right center gap. Senior Dane Wisneski (Jupiter, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Daytona State College) followed with a walk and then with runners on the corners, redshirt sophomore Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson HS) hit a safety squeeze down the first base line to score the speedy Suchy from third to cut the lead to 3-1 after the top half of the inning.

The Green and Blue broke the game open in the top of the fifth with eight runs. Redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) started the inning with a single up the middle. Junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South fork HS) followed with a walk to move Beisner to second and freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) plated Beisner with a single to left field. Suchy then tied the game with an opposite field single to right to score Bednar from second and move Nick Rivera to third. With two outs, Diaz was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then freshman Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) helped the Eagles take the lead with a single up the middle to plate two runs and give the Green and Blue a 5-3 advantage. Senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) kept the rally going with a RBI single to right and junior Sean Dwyer (Taveras, Fla./Taveras HS) followed with a single through the right side past a diving first basemen to plate another and give FGCU a 7-3 lead. Reeves then scored on a wild pitch for an 8-3 advantage for the Eagles. Beisner then walked and Bednar followed with a single through the right side to plate Dwyer from third and moved Beisner to third. Suchy would end the rally with a ground out to shortstop with the Eagles up 9-3. Seven runs came with two outs for the Eagles on four this and a walk.

The Bulls got a run back in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back doubles by Teaf and Mendez.

The Eagles manufactured a run in the top of the eighth with a walk by Diaz to lead off the inning followed by a single by Selesky. Reeves then walked to load the bases and then walked Bednar with the bases loaded to walk in a run, to make it a 10-4 advantage for FGCU.

FGCU added three in the ninth with Suchy and Mendoza reaching on back-to-back errors and a walk to Selesky to load the bases. A sacrifice fly-out by Reeves brought Suchy from third and then Dwyer plated two runs on a bases-clearing triple to give the Green and Blue a 13-4 lead. The Bulls tried to mount a comeback in the ninth but only managed to push one run across the board before ending the game.

Sophomore Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) started for the Eagles in the mid-week contest and was tabbed with a no decision. The Naples, Fla. product gave up three runs on three hits and fanned one batter in 2.1 innings of work. Redshirt freshman Clint Knoblaugh (Wellington, Fla./Wellington HS) replaced Tillery mid-way through the third. Knoblaugh got the final two outs in the third with runners in scoring position. Knoblaugh would throw 3.2 hitless innings and strike out four batters to pick up the win. Senior R.J. Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) came in for Knoblaugh in the bottom of the seventh  and gave up one run on three hits in two innings of work. Redshirt junior Kevin Bryant (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) and sophomore Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) combined to get the final three outs in the ninth inning.

The offense was led by Selesky who recorded three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Dwyer also collected three hits with a RBI and a run scored. Reeves and Bednar each tallied two hits and two RBI in the win. Suchy also collected two hits while scoring a team-high three times.

The Eagles will return home Thursday for its first A-Sun home matchup against Lipscomb. FGCU will play a three-game series against the Bisons, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Swanson Stadium.
