FORT MYERS, Fla. – Playing its second to last home match of the 2013 dual match season, the FGCU men’s tennis team defeated conference opponent USC Upstate 5-2 at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Friday night.

“This was our best team effort of the year so far,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Every doubles team and every singles player was fueled by positive energy. It was such a fun match to watch.”

The Eagles are now 9-7 on the season with an impressive 4-1 mark in A-Sun play. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-9 this season, who were unable to get their first league win as they sit at 0-3 against A-Sun opponents.

On the doubles courts, FGCU stormed out to win the first two matches and clinch the first dual match point immediately. In the No. 2 spot, the pair made up of sophomore Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS-FL) and junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) battled to win 8-5. The second doubles victory came at the racquets of sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) and junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) to secure the doubles point and put the Eagles up 1-0 from the start.

In singles, Tsamas and Bao both won in straight set sweeps to finish the evening with singles and doubles triumphs that put the Green and Blue in a commanding 3-1 lead.

“This was a huge win for us,” explained Tsamas. “It felt great to rebound after last weekend with a win like this. Everyone brought it today and we are happy with the result.”

Senior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) came through for FGCU with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win to secure the dual match victory over USC Upstate.

The fifth and final dual match point for the Eagles came courtesy of Lvovsky in the No. 5 spot who took a three-set thriller by a score of 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3 to complete a successful day for the FGCU lineup.

FGCU will be back in action at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against ETSU to complete its 2013 spring home schedule.
