FORT MYERS, Fla. – On the back of right hander Hunter Brothers, Lipscomb was able to level the season series with a 5-2 win over the No. 26 FGCU baseball team, Friday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.

The Eagles drops to 17-6 on the year and 3-2 in A-Sun play while the Bisons move to 10-18 and 2-3 in  conference action.

This marks the fifth time this season that FGCU has been held to six hits and the Green and Blue have gone on to lose three out of those five games.

The Bisons got to junior left hander Brandon Bixler (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) early, pushing across one run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Taylor Stewart got on with a single to left field. Aaron Sandoval followed with a walk and Zach Lowery knocked in Stewart from second with a RBI single through the left side.

The Green and Blue manufactured runs in the bottom half of the third when freshman Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) walked with one out to begin the inning. Senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) would then double down the right field line and Selesky would be held up at third on the double. A wild pitch by Brothers would bring in Selesky to tie the game and Reeves would move to third on the play. With one out, junior Sean Dwyer (Taveras, Fla./Taveras HS) would hit a sacrifice fly-out to straight away centerfield to plate Reeves for a 2-1 advantage.

The lead wouldn’t last long for the Eagles as the Bisons capitalized in the top half of the fifth. Drew Adams started with a lead-off walk. Stewart would follow with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher, which Bixler decided to go for the lead runner and made an errant throw to second. Adams would advance to third on the error. Sandoval would then put down a safety squeeze down to the first basemen, sophomore Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) and Tillery tried to get the out a home but was too late to get Adams, who tied the game up at 2-2. Both runners would move up to second and third the following batter on wild pitches and Tyson Ashcraft would plate both runners with a single up the middle to make it a 5-2 score, in favor of Lipscomb.

Bixler (2-2) would be pulled after the fifth, giving up five runs, on six hits and four walks while fanning eight batters in the loss. Senior Danny Patrick (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Pepperdine/Palm Beach State) would relieve Bixler in the sixth and throw four hitless innings, giving up only one walk while striking out four batters.

The Eagles tried to rally in the bottom half of the fifth but stranded three runners on base. The bats went cold for FGCU in the sixth, seventh and eighth. In the ninth down three runs, Tillery tied to mount a comeback with a single to center with one out but was stranded there with a strikeout by senior Tito Mendoza (Miramar, Fla./Cooper City HS/Cowley CC) and a fly out to end the game by Selesky.

Brothers went seven innings, giving up two runs, on five hits and fanned six batters. Brothers would hand the ball off to Tyler Burnstrom in the eighth and Burnstrom would go the final two inings, giving up only one hit while striking out two to pick up his first save of the year.

The Eagles only managed to produce six hits in the loss.  Reeves picked up half the hits for the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Dwyer would pick up the only RBI for the Eagles with his sacrifice fly-out. Selesky, Tillery and freshman freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) were the only other Eagles to pick up hits in the game.

The Eagles will face Lipscomb tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the finale of the three-game series at Swanson Stadium.
