Men’s Golf Moves Into Tie for Seventh Place After Day of A-Sun Championships

BRASELTON, Ga. – Freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) carded one of just four rounds and even-par or lower on Monday, as the FGCU men’s golf team moved into a tie for seventh place after two rounds of action at the Atlantic Sun Championships held at the Legends Course of Chateau Elan.

Through two rounds of play, FGCU holds a four-man score of 313-311/624 to sit in share of seventh and will begin Tuesday’s third round at 8 a.m. going off holes 11-15. Live scoring of the final round is available through or can be found on or

Figueroa’s second round 72 was one of just three even-par rounds on the day, while just one player finished under-par on the day. Teeing off on No. 10, Figueroa finished his opening nine holes at four-under 32 en route to the 72 that moved him from a tie for 31st into a tie for 10th overall in the field of 50. Through two rounds, Figueroa’s 79-72/151 scorecard features seven birdies, which is good for second in the field.

No. 17 UNF leads the field for the second straight day after supplying a second round 301 for a two-day total of 289-301/590, sitting just one stroke ahead of second-place Kennesaw State’s 298-293/591. The Owls lowered their team score by five strokes in the second round thanks in part to the play of Austin Vick, who remained in first place with a 72.

Ranking among the leaders with 21 total pars, sophomore Jack Hernandez’s (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) two-over par 74 highlighted the Eagles’ opening round, while he followed with a second round 82 to move into a tie for 22nd with a score of 156. Freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) sits beside Hernandez in 22nd, providing a two-day total of 79-77/156.

Turning in counting scores of 81 on the day, junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS), 81-81/162, and Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College), 83-81/164, landed tied for 40th and 43rd,respectively.
