Figueroa ties for 6th place individually

BRASELTON, Ga. – For the second straight day the FGCU men’s golf team moved up one spot in the Atlantic Sun Championship standings, firing its tournament-best with a 300 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in sole possession of sixth place at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan.

The Eagles’ final round 300 concluded a 313-311-300/924 scorecard for the Green and Blue in their fifth A-Sun Championship appearance. Freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) was the team’s top finisher in a tie for sixth overall, marking the fourth straight year FGCU has placed an individual in the top 10.

“We know we didn’t play our best this week, but it’s an experience we’ll definitely learn from,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “I’m happy Edward was able to finish the tournament on a high note and hopefully he played his way into an NCAA Regional. This will be an important summer for the guys to continue to work on their game and get into some competitive tournaments. It’s a young group with a lot of talent and I’m excited to see the strides we can make.”

Nationally-ranked (No. 17) UNF took home the team title for the second straight year with rounds of 289-301-291/881. The Ospreys are the first team to win back-to-back A-Sun titles since Jacksonville State did so in 2002 and 2003. UNF’s MJ Maguire took home medalist honors thanks to a final round four-under 68, which was the lowest round of the tournament.

Figueroa’s sixth place finish is his fourth top 10 of the year, as he finished as FGCU’s low-man for the sixth time in nine events played. The Naples, Fla. product rebounded nicely from an opening round 79 with an even-par 72 on Monday and a one-under 71 in Tuesday’s final round. Figueroa along with Maguire were the only two players in the field of 50 to shoot even-par or lower the final two rounds, while Figueroa’s 11 birdies were one behind Maguire’s tournament-leading 12.

Also making his first A-Sun Championship appearance, freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) nearly recovered from an opening round 79 of his own to finish in the top 20. Sherwin finished with a 79-77-76/232 scorecard to tie for 21st position. Sherwin was second on the team with 32 pars over the three rounds, while all five of his birdies came on Monday.

FGCU’s third underclassmen and local product in the lineup rounded out the team’s top three finishers, as sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) tied for 25th place. Hernandez was the Green and Blue’s low man on Sunday with a 74 and finished with rounds of 82 and 77.

Junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) saved his best round for last with a 76, capping an 83-81-76/240 tournament in which he finished 41st. Classmate Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) posted three consecutive 81s to finish in 45th place.
