FORT MYERS, Fla. – For his efforts in the five victories last week, FGCU baseball sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week on Monday morning, as announced by the league office.
Helping the Eagles extend their winning streak to eight straight last week, which matches the best in the A-Sun this year, Suchy hit .455 (10-for-20) with a .864 slugging percentage over the five games last week, scoring a team-high eight runs and driving in seven RBI while connecting for a trio of home runs.
In the doubleheader matchup at FIU last Wednesday (May 1), Suchy went .444 (4-for-9) in the pair of games, connecting for a home run and recording a pair of RBI and three runs scored.
The Bradenton, Fla. native followed with a strong showing in the trio of A-Sun games with Jacksonville last weekend at Swanson Stadium, providing a .462 average (6-for-13) at the plate and supplying team-highs of five RBI and five runs scored. Suchy also recorded a .923 slugging percentage in those three games, highlighted by a pair of home runs in the series finale on Sunday to increase his team-high season total to seven.
This season, Suchy is hitting .300 with a .444 slugging percentage, collecting 34 RBI, 26 runs scored and five stolen bases, good for second on the team.
It marks the first career A-Sun weekly honor for Suchy, and the second this season for the Eagles after redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) claimed the recognition on Feb. 25. Junior right-hander Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) was also twice named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week this season (Feb. 25, April 29).
Opening a five-game road trip, FGCU returns to action on Wednesday when it heads to Tallahassee, Fla. to face Florida A&M in doubleheader matchup beginning at 2 p.m. The Green and Blue then head to Jacksonville, Fla. for a three-game A-Sun series against North Florida, which currently sits atop the league standings.
