FGCU Volleyball Unveils 2013 Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year Dave Nichols and the 2012 A-Sun Regular Season Champion FGCU Volleyball team have announced their schedule for the upcoming 2013 season. The Green and Blue will play 14 home contests, all nine Atlantic Sun foes, and travel to IUPUI and Florida State University to participate in a pair of preseason tournaments.
“We are very excited with our 2013 schedule,” said Nichols. “We continue our tradition of playing top ten programs and interstate rivals, highlighted by our home tournament where Penn State highlights a strong field. Our non-conference schedule also includes national powers Ohio State and Florida State, as well as in state rivals FIU, FAU, and USF. We also return our top eight players from last year, so with a veteran and talented team we look forward to continuing our success in the ever improving A-Sun Conference.”
The challenging 13-game non-conference schedule features games against schools from the Big East, ACC, Atlantic 10, Mid-Eastern Atlantic, American Athletic, Southland, Missouri Valley, Big 10, and Conference USA. FGCU will play a total of five matches against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams.
The Green and Blue kick off the season on the road at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational (Aug. 30-31) where they will take on VCU, Illinois St., and host IUPUI.
The Eagles then head back to the Sunshine State to participate in the Florida State tournament (Sept. 7-Sept. 8). The tournament field includes Ohio State, FAMU, and host Florida State.
FGCU opens the season at home against USF on September 10. The Eagles then host the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites FGCU Airport Volleyball Classic from Sept. 13-14 where they will take on Central Arkansas, Marquette, and Penn State.
Apart from the three tournaments, FGCU will take on Bethune-Cookman (Oct. 1), FAU (Oct. 8), and FIU (Oct. 15) in individual regular season matches throughout the year.
The Green and Blue’s Atlantic Sun Conference schedule will begin on Friday, Sept. 20 as they host Jacksonville. The Eagles will then compete in the double round robin format and face each conference opponent at home and on the road.
The remaining home A-Sun matches are UNF (Sept. 21), Kennesaw St. (Sept. 27), Mercer (Sept. 28), Lipscomb (Oct. 18), Northern Kentucky (Oct. 19), ETSU (Nov. 1), USC Upstate (Nov. 2) and Stetson (Nov. 8).
Kennesaw State and the KSU Convocation Center will play host to the Atlantic Sun Championship from Nov. 21-23.
