FORT MYERS, Fla. – Bringing a wealth of collegiate and professional experience at a young age, FGCU men’s soccer coach Bob Butehorn has announced the addition of former Major League Soccer goalkeeper Alec Dufty as an assistant coach for the 2013 season.

Dufty, who spent the 2012 year as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Illinois-Chicago, will work closely with FGCU’s goalkeepers.

“We’re excited to add Alec to our staff,” said Butehorn, the reigning NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year. “He is a terrific young coach who brings valuable experience and skills to our team.”

Dufty served three stints as a goalkeeper in the MLS, playing for the Chicago Fire (Oct. 2010-Dec. 2011), Columbus Crew (May-Nov. 2009) and New York Red Bulls (Jan.-April 2009). The 26-year-old Dufty also played for AC St. Louis of the North American Soccer League (Feb.-Oct. 2011), where he served as the club’s captain and was named the Most Valuable Player.

Collegiately, Dufty – who graduated in 2009 – was the starting goalkeeper and team captain in a four-year career (2005-08) at Evansville, where he garnered All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades three times (2006, ’07, ’08). He was also a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team in preparation for the U-20 World Cup. During his college years, Dufty also played with the Raleigh Elite in the USL Premier Development League.

Dufty coached the Chicago Fire Juniors goalkeepers from May-August 2010, mentoring 10-18 year olds, including several Division-I goalkeeping prospects. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., the Raleigh, N.C., native also served as a soccer camp counselor and instructor at both Duke and Evansville during his collegiate playing days.

Dufty, who began his time with FGCU at the beginning of August, completes FGCU’s staff as it commences the 2013 season in a nationally-televised contest at USF on Friday night on NSCAATV.com. Kickoff from Tampa is set for 8 p.m., and the match is the NSCAATV.com Game of the Week. More information will be posted on FGCUAthletics.com later this week.
