HONOLULU, Hawaii – Finding a number of scoring opportunities throughout the contest, the FGCU women’s soccer team was finally able to break into the scoring column with a goal in the 54th minute off the foot of junior Julia Roddar (Falun Sweden/Wisconsin) to defeat Portland State University, 1-0, on Friday night at the University of Hawaii Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Classic.
With the win FGCU extends their unbeaten streak to five matches. The Green and Blue’s record now sits at 4-1-1 on the year.
“We had plenty of opportunities tonight, and we put them under a lot of pressure,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “I liked the attitude we played with and Julia scored a really nice goal. It’s a good result and a good win on the road.”
Although the teams ended the first half scoreless, the Eagles did not lack scoring opportunities. The Green and Blue connected for 10 shots in the first, landing four of those shots on goal. Meanwhile, PSU, only struck for one shot.
The Eagles finally found the back of the net at the 54:54 mark off the foot of Roddar, assisted by Tabby Tindell (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS) and Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS).
For the game, the Eagles held a 16-1 advantage in shots and a commanding 6-1 lead in the corner kick battle.
