FORT MYERS, Fla. – After an eight-day hiatus, the FGCU women’s basketball team will continue the 2013-14 slate with a home contest against Charlotte on Wednesday night. Tipoff at Alico Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
THE GREEN & BLUE
FGCU continues the season after opening the schedule with a perfect 2-0 mark. The Eagles recently defeated Bethune-Cookman, 71-38, to remain undefeated for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C., R.J. Reynolds High School) currently leads the Eagles with 19.5 points per game. Knight opened the season with 25 points at FIU and continued her impressive return to the hardwood with 14 points against Bethune-Cookman.
Senior Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane High School), who was named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, added nine points and 10 rebounds in the win. Hansen is averaging 8.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest through the first two games.
Newcomers Jenna Cobb (New Holland, Ohio/Miami Trace High School) and Kaneisha Atwater (Fort Pierce, Fla./Fort Pierce Westover High School) have also aided in the Eagles’ early success. The duo has added 10.5 and 8.5 points per game, respectively.
Head Coach Karl Smesko, a four-time A-Sun Coach of the Year, earned his 350th career victory with the win at FIU and will continue to guide the Eagles in his 12th season.
SCOUTING THE 49ers
Charlotte will travel to Fort Myers with a season-opening record of 1-2. The 49ers began the season with a 66-56 win over Liberty, but have since fallen at Kansas State and at Minnesota. As a team, Charlotte has averaged 62 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 73 points per contest. They have been outrebounded by opponents, 43.7 to 29.3 and have held a turnover margin of +7.3.
Individually, redshirt junior Gabby Tyler leads the team with 10.3 points per game this season after putting up 16 points at Minnesota last Wednesday. Sophomore Alexis Alexander paces the team on the boards with 6.7 rebounds per contest. The Atlanta native grabbed 12 rebounds in the team’s last game.
In last year’s matchup with the Eagles, then-senior Jennifer Hailey led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while current senior Ny Hammonds added 11 points for the home team.
Last season the 49ers finished a stellar year with a record of 26-6 and a Conference USA mark of 13-1. The team fell to Davidson in the C-USA finals.
Following the mid-week matchup, the Eagles will hit the road to for four games in seven days. The team will take on Southern Mississippi before heading to The Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where they will face TCU, Stanford and South Dakota State.
