HATTIESBURG, Miss. – With a record of 3-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign, the FGCU women’s basketball team will look to move to 4-0 as it hits the road for a four-game stretch. The Eagles will begin the trip with a 7 p.m. tipoff against The University of Southern Mississippi at Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday.

FGCU picked up its third-consecutive win with a 78-73 victory over Charlotte on Wednesday night. Sophomore Stephanie Haas (Avon Lake, Ohio/Magnificat High School) paced the Eagles with a career-high 19 points, while Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane High School), Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C., R.J. Reynolds High School) and Jenna Cobb (New Holland, Ohio/Miami Trace High School) all added double-figure points for FGCU.
Knight currently leads the squad with an average of 18.0 points per game, while Hansen has pulled down a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game.
As newcomers, Cobb and Kaneisha Atwater (Fort Pierce, Fla./Fort Pierce Westover High School) have also facilitated the Eagles’ early success. The pair has added 11.3 and 7.7 points per game, respectively.
Collectively, the Eagles’ starting lineup of Atwater, Hansen, Haas, Knight and Cobb has produced nearly 80 percent of the team’s scoring.
As a unit, the Eagles have scored 74.7 points per game this season, while holding opponents to just 55.3 points per contest. Eagle foes have held a slight advantage on the glass through three games with a 40.3-39.0 margin, while the Eagles have maintained control of the ball with just 10.3 turnovers per game. FGCU has forced 20 opponent turnovers per game this season and has held opponents to a .349 shooting percentage.
Offensively, FGCU has recorded a shooting percentage of .413 this season with a .323 mark from 3-point range. The team has made a combined 20 shots from long range and has maintained a shooting percentage of .660 from the free-throw line.
In 12 years of FGCU women’s basketball program history, the Eagles have never faced the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. USM becomes the 130th program to take on FGCU. The Eagles have produced a record of 99-30 in first-time meetings.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Southern Miss will welcome the Eagles to the Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday evening with a record of 3-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles have picked up wins at home against West Alabama, South Alabama and Arkansas-Little Rock but lost to Hampton, 74-58, in their only road game this season.
As a unit, the Golden Eagles are shooting .462 from the field with a .278 shooting percentage from beyond-the-arc. They have outscored opponents, 81-61.5 through four contests and have outrebounded foes 40-37.8. USM has forced an average of 25 turnovers, while turning the ball over 16 times per game themselves.
Individually, senior point guard Jamierra Faulkner has facilitated a strong offensive attack with 47 assists through just four games, while also adding 14.3 points. Faulker leads the team in 3-point shooting percentage, assists and steals. Junior forward Tamara Jones leads all players with 23.5 points per game this season and recorded a career-high 41 points against Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday. Jones also leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per contest.
Following the Hattiesburg faceoff, the Eagles will fly south for the 2012 Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Green and Blue will take on TCU, Stanford and South Dakota State in the Thanksgiving Week showcase.
