KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The FGCU women’s golf team concluded the 2014 Kiawah Island Classic with an overall team score of 938 and a 16th-place finish.  While battling tough weather conditions, the Eagles shot a combined 314 in the third and final round to finish among the top half of the 36-team field.

The Green and Blue finished 46 strokes behind tournament winner Kent State, which carded an overall score of 892, 14 strokes better than any other team.

“Today was extremely cold and windy, the type of weather we are not used to seeing,” explained head coach Sarah Trew.  “I am proud of the way the team hung in there and battled for every shot.  They all kept good attitudes throughout and I think we have a lot of positives to take away from this tournament.  On days like today, you can either choose to stay mentally tough or to let the elements dictate how you play.  We did a good job of staying focused.”

Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) finished atop the team’s standings with an overall score of 231.  Price carded a score of 78 in the final round and ranked 42nd among the tournament field.  Price birdied her first hole but recorded three-consecutive bogeys to fall behind in her front nine.  Two double-bogeys brought Price’s final score to +6 to conclude the tournament at +15.

Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School) recorded her best round of the tournament in the harsh conditions with a card of 77.  Carlson shot 5-over for a total score of 236 through three rounds and a final ranking of 70.

With an overall score of 236, Megan VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) tied Carlson to rank 70th among field.  VanEtten carded a 78 in the third round with two birdies, six bogeys and a double-bogey to finish +6 on the day.

Rebecca VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) cut six strokes off her second-round score to card an 81 in the final round.  She shot five bogeys and two double bogeys to finish at 9-over on the day and finished tied at 112th with an overall score of 244.

Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) rounded out the Eagles with an overall score of 245.  Detlefsen carded an 85 in the final round and finished the tournament with an overall rank of 116.

The Eagles finished 20 strokes behind Atlantic Sun foe North Florida but scored 52 strokes better than USC Upstate and 78 strokes ahead of Northern Kentucky.

The Green and Blue will return to action at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational hosted by James Madison in Jacksonville, Fla. Mar. 14-16.
