FORT MYERS, Fla. – Just over half-way through the 2014 spring season, FGCU men’s tennis junior Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) continues to represent the Eagles in a national spotlight through his placement at No. 70 in the fourth installment of Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, announced by ITA officials on Tuesday afternoon.

Released every other week during the spring, the rankings list the nation’s top 125 singles players determined by a computerized system, using the ITA's average points-per-match formula.

Previously ranked No. 66 (Jan. 2-Feb. 10), No. 93 (Feb. 11-25) and No. 54 (Feb. 26-Mar.10), Vives’ placement at 70 is a result of his 10-1 record playing one singles in each of this season’s dual matches. After ending his fall campaign with nine-straight wins, Vives opened the spring season with victories over then-No. 36 Florida State and then-No. 60 Nebraska, increasing his streak to 11, which at the time was the longest in the nation. After establishing his reign on Jan. 23, the Barcelona native extended his streak to 14, before falling to Auburn’s Daniel Cochrane, then-ranked 112th, on Feb. 7.

Holding an overall record of 24-3, three of his wins and all of his losses came from opponents also named to the current list. During his fall tour Vives beat No. 40 Jason Tahir (No. 10 Duke) and No. 72 Leandro Toledo (No. 51 Minnesota), all leading to his win of November’s Dick Vitale Invite, after losing to No. 166 Grayson Goldin (No. 34 FSU) in the quarterfinals of the Bedford Cup and No. 25 Nathan Pasha (No. 16 UGA) in the quarterfinals of ITA Regionals. To start the spring, Vives pulled a win over No. 122 Dominic Cotrone (No. 34 FSU), before falling in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, to No. 95 Cochrane of Auburn.

After suffering his only defeat of the year, the Green and Blue’s leading player has rebounded by posting five-consecutive wins, each in straight sets.

Vives’ early success on the season has garnered him two Atlantic Sun Conference weekly awards as he was named Player of the Week on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5.

So far this season four players from the A-Sun have been listed in the rankings, but Vives is the only player from the conference named in each of the four editions. Joining Vives in the current rankings are No. 105 David Biosca and No. 124 Diego Nunez of ETSU. Previously ranked was Kennesaw State’s Tobi Menhofer, listed 121nd from Jan. 2-Feb. 11.

The next round of ITA rankings will be released on Mar. 25 and the current rankings can be viewed in their completion here.

The Eagles get back to play the Atlantic Sun Conference as they travel to ETSU on Mar. 14 at 2 p.m., and USC Upstate on Mar. 15 at 2 p.m. For complete coverage of FGCU men’s tennis this season, follow us on Twitter @FGCU_MTEN and visit
