OCALA, Fla. – After three rounds of play at the Morehead State Ocala Invitational at the Juliette Falls Golf Club in Dunnellon, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team captured sixth place in the field of 16 teams.  The Eagles shaved four strokes off their second-round score for a team score of 305 in the third round and a total score of 912.

Daytona State College maintained the lead through all three rounds and finished in first place with a team score of 889.  Houston Baptist, North Florida, Toledo and Murray State rounded out the top five.  The Eagles finished just one stoke out of the top five and 23 strokes behind the tournament leader.  FGCU held a lead over in-state rival Stetson and host Morehead State.

“I’m proud of the way the team played today,” explained head coach Sarah Trew. “We were able produce one of the field’s top-five scores on the day and I’m happy we were able to finish on a positive note.  We have work to do before the conference championship tournament but I am confident that we will be ready.”

Senior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School) finished atop the Eagles lineup with a total score of 223.  Carlson matched her second-round score with a 74 in the third round to place tenth in the field of over 90 golfers.

Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) placed 19th with a total card of 227.  Price also matched her second-round score with a 76 in the final round.

Sophomore Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) moved up to 32nd place with a score of 77 in the final round.  Yong finished with a total score of 231.  Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) also finished with a combined score of 231 and a 32nd place finish after carding a 78 on Tuesday.

Sophomore Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) competed for the team and recorded a score of 79 in the third round for a total card of 243 through three days.  Detlefsen finishes in 72nd place after completing the third round with her best score of the tournament.

Individually, Rebecca VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) and Megan VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) finished the event with scores of 77 and 79, respectively to place 49th and 64th in the field.  Rebecca finished with a total score of 236, while Megan carded a 240.

The Eagles will conclude their season April 14-16 at the Atlantic Sun Championship in Jekyll Island, Ga.
