FORT MYERS, Fla. – With just five matches remaining in the regular season, FGCU men’s tennis junior Jordi Vives continues to represent the Eagles in a national spotlight through his placement at No. 62 in the fifth installment of Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, announced by ITA officials on Tuesday evening.

Released every other week during the spring, the rankings list the nation’s top 125 singles players determined by a computerized system, using the ITA's average points-per-match formula.

Previously ranked No. 66 (Jan. 2-Feb. 10), No. 93 (Feb. 11-25), No. 54 (Feb. 26-Mar.10) and No. 70 (Mar. 11-Mar.25), Vives’ (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) placement at 62 is a result of his 13-2 record playing one singles in each of this season’s dual matches. After ending his fall campaign with nine-straight wins, Vives opened the spring season with victories over then-No. 36 Florida State and then-No. 60 Nebraska, increasing his streak to 11, which at the time was the longest in the nation. After establishing his reign on Jan. 23, the Barcelona native extended his streak to 14, before falling to Auburn’s Daniel Cochrane, then-ranked 112th, on Feb. 7.

Holding an overall record of 27-4, six of his wins and three of his losses came from opponents also named to the current list. During his fall tour Vives beat No. 48 Jason Tahir (No. 14 Duke), No. 66 Leandro Toledo (No. 50 Minnesota) and No. 106 Luca Cortinteli (No. 4 UVA), all leading to his win of November’s Dick Vitale Invite, after losing to No. 39 Nathan Pasha (No. 7 UGA) in the quarterfinals of ITA Regionals.

To start the spring, Vives pulled a win over No. 101 Dominic Cotrone (No. 24 FSU), before falling in three sets to No. 64 Cochrane (No. 34 Auburn). Earlier this month Vives beat the Atlantic Sun’s other ranked player, topping No. 116 David Biosca (No.59 ETSU), before suffering his most recent loss in a rematch to Toledo. After falling in only his second defeat of the year, the Green and Blue’s leading player rebounded with a win over No. 80 Chris Helliar of UAB, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

Vives’ early success on the season has garnered him two A-Sun weekly awards as he was named Player of the Week on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5.

So far this season four players from the A-Sun have been listed in the rankings, but Vives is the only player from the conference named in each of the four editions. Joining Vives in the current rankings is No. 116 Biosca, with previously ranked players being Kennesaw State’s Tobi Menhofer, listed 121nd from Jan. 2-Feb. 11, and ETSU’s Diego Nunez, listed 124th from Mar.11-25.

The next round of ITA rankings will be released on April 8 and the current rankings can be viewed in their completion here.

The Eagles resume A-Sun play at home as they host Kennesaw State on Mar. 28 at 11 a.m., and Mercer the next day at 6 p.m. For complete coverage of FGCU men’s tennis, follow us on Twitter @FGCU_MTEN and visit where full recaps and results will be available at the end of each day.
