TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
- The FGCU baseball team (18-11, 5-1 Atlantic Sun) took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning against No. 1 Florida State (23-5, 10-2 ACC) at Dick Houser Stadium in Tallahassee on Tuesday night but the Seminoles got the best of the FGCU bullpen and ultimately came away with an 8-3 victory.

Brady Anderson (Arcardia, Fla./DeSoto HS) made his first start of the season on the mound and first since the 2012 season and delivered in a big way against the nation’s top team. The sophomore tossed a career-best 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five while giving up two runs. Anderson’s younger brother Garrett (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) came on in relief and worked a clean seventh but struggled in the eighth and ultimately took the loss in this one.

The FGCU bats collected just five hits and scored all three runs in the first two innings. No FGCU player had multiple hits and it was shortstop Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) providing the power, lifting his first homerun of the season in the top of the second.

“We came out strong and Brady pitched very well against as quality an opponent as we’ll face,” head coach Dave Tollett added. “But we didn’t finish the job and that’s the kind of game we need to learn to finish.”

In the top of the first, FGCU wasted no time showing they would be a threat to take down the top team in the land. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) led off with a walk and Colton Bottomley (Davie, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS)  wore a pitch to put two runners on quickly before recording an out. With one out, Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) walked to load the bases for Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) who reached on a fielder’s choice, driving in the first run of the ball game, everyone would be safe on the play with the help of an FSU error. With the bases still loaded, Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central HS) grounded out to third base but drove in the another run giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead before the Seminoles even came to the plate.

Anderson shut down FSU in the first and with one out in the second; Diaz homered to left to increase the FGCU lead to 3-0 but that would complete the offensive output for the Green and Blue on Tuesday night as the FSU bullpen was able to clamp down and limit FGCU to just four hits the rest of the way.

Florida State began to chip away in the third when a Jameis Winston walk to lead off the inning resulted in a run to make it 3-1. FSU would add another run in the fourth when John Nogowski homered to left. Anderson would maintain the 3-2 FGCU lead however through his exit following the sixth inning.

After working an easy seventh in relief of older brother Brady, Garrett Anderson began to struggle in the eighth, giving up a leadoff single and hitting a batter to put the go-ahead run on base before recording single out. Andris Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./Indian River State College) took over on the mound but gave up a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. Tollett handed Tillery the ball from there but he would walk in the tying run before recording the first out with a strikeout. The next batter however would single to left, driving in two and giving FSU a 5-3 lead. The Seminoles would add three more runs in the eighth and the five-run deficit would prove too much for the Green and Blue in the ninth who put two runners on but to no avail as FSU came away with the 8-3 victory.

The Eagles are now 0-4 against ranked teams this season, 1-6 all-time against Florida State and 0-5 now all-time against teams ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Green and Blue will return to the field tomorrow to take on Florida A&M (10-16, 7-4 MEAC) at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee at 1 p.m. FGCU swept FAMU when it visited Swanson Stadium Mar. 14-16. FGCU will return home finally this weekend when they welcome Kennesaw State (13-18, 2-7 A-Sun) to Swanson Stadium for a three-game set.

ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP
For the first time in program history, the FGCU baseball team will play host to the 2014 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship set to take place May 21-25 at Swanson Stadium. The top eight teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the championship and compete in a double-elimination style tournament to determine the A-Sun’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are three-time A-Sun Regular Season Champions and finished second in the league last season.
