FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (28-16, 12-5 Atlantic Sun) fell behind Mercer (33-11, 15-5 A-Sun) early and were unable to mount a comeback despite putting runners on base late, ultimately going down by a score of 4-0. The all-time series now locked up, 10-10, with Sunday’s matchup at 1 p.m. at Swanson Stadium serving as the rubber match.
Nick Deckert (Tallahassee, Fla./Tallahassee CC) took the mound on Saturday afternoon to make his second start this week and would work through 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and struck out three before ultimately taking the loss. Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) tossed 4.1 innings of relief and surrendered two runs of his own while also striking out three Bears. Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) completed this one on the mound for the Green and Blue, throwing a scoreless, hitless ninth to give FGCU a chance to comeback in the bottom half.
At the plate only Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) managed to pick up multiple hits against Mercer’s Grant Papelian who would surrender a total of just five hits. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) did pick up one hit to extend his team-best hitting streak to six games while Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central) walked once to extend his streak of games in which he has reached base to six as well.
“It just wasn’t a great all around effort today,” head coach Dave Tollett added. “We need to come out tomorrow ready to play.”
Mercer’s Michael Massi put the Bears on the board just about as early as possible with a homerun over the left field wall to lead off the game. Mercer would tack on another run in the third to make it 2-0 and had a runner on third with two away in the fourth before Deckert’s day came to an end. Anderson would come on and keep the score steady at 2-0 at that point.
In the top of the fifth, the Bears would add two more runs with a two-out rally that began with a walk and followed with a double and single to bring in the run. Anderson worked out of that jam as well to limit the damage but the FGCU bats were unable to capitalize. The Eagles would strand six runners in all on Saturday afternoon including two in the ninth with one out.
The series will conclude tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start. Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) will be on the mound for FGCU and will square off with Eric Nyquist who leads all Bears starters with a 3.11 ERA and a 7-0 record to go with 37 strikeouts in 66.2 innings on the bump. English currently ranks third in the A-Sun with a 2.37 ERA and has struck out 35 batters in 49.1 innings or work.
