Saturday, February 08, 2003
Naples, FL – The FGCU softball team defeated Florida Southern 9-5 in their first game in school history Saturday afternoon at Gulf Coast High School. However, the Mocs got the best of the Eagles in the second game of the double header 12-2 as each team is now 1-1 on the season. Florida Southern got on the board early as they produced two runs in the top of the first thanks to a single from Bobbie Brandon. Ashley Cecil led the bottom of the first off with a single to earn the school’s first ever hit as she then stole second to earn the first stolen base. After a Kristy Ringler single, Blaire Toleman reached safely on an error from the Mocs third basemen, which drove home 2 runs to even the score at 2-2. The Eagles would break the game open in the bottom of the fourth however, as they scored 4 runs thanks to a double from short stop Lacey Carter who drove in three runs on the play. Freshman ace Christine Beck picked up her first win of the season as she went the distance, throwing a complete game, striking out 1 while giving up 3 earned runs. Offensively, the Eagles were led by Kristy Ringler who went 3-for-4, scoring 2 runs, and Lacey Carter who went 1-for-3 with 3 RBI’s including the clutch double in the fourth. In the second game of the day, the Mocs were too much as they scored 6 runs in the third inning to jump out to a quick 7-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Carolynn Underhill was roughed up for 7 earned runs, as she gave up 8 hits in 2.1 innings of work. Beth Beitelchie replaced Underhill and pitched 4 solid innings, giving up 1 earned run while striking out 1. Florida Southern was led by Teri Morgan who went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s. The Eagles were led by Kristy Ringler who went 2-for-3 and 5-for-7 for the day. FGCU will take on Lynn University tomorrow, as Freshman Christine Beck will be back on the mound in the first game.
