Softball Team sweeps Gannon University
Fort Myers, FL- Behind two excellent pitching performances and an ever improving offense the Eagles swept both ends of the doubleheader against an overmatched Gannon University softball team 6-0 and 1-0, respectively.
The Eagles opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second as they batted through the lineup, leaving Gannon University’s senior pitcher Heather Ford dazed and confused as the Eagles scored six runs from five hits. Those six runs were more than enough for Kelly Powe (5-5), the Eagles starter as she picked up her sixth win of the season holding Gannon University to only 2 hits.
In the nightcap junior Ashley Cecil led off with a single to the shortstop then later scored on a throwing error that would later be the game winner. Gannon tried to answer back loading the bases in the second but failed to do so ending the inning on a hard hit ball to shortstop. Pitching led the way as Eagles starter Annie Voyles and Gannon’s starter Jenn Kulick went back and forth matching each other almost every pitch.
The Eagles defeated Gannon University 6-0 behind strong pitching of junior starter Kelly Powe (6-5). Powe threw a complete game shutout as she picked up her sixth win of the season. She mixed her pitches brilliantly throughout the evening, she never allowed a runner to reach third base while striking out eight.
The second inning of the opener was a hitting clinic by the Eagles starters as they batted through their lineup scoring six runs on five hits. Erin Ogden led things off with a single up the middle, as Blair Toleman reached base on a fielding error. Ashley Congdon walked to load the bases for freshman Annie Voyles who delivered with a two run double to right center. Jesse Rouse singled to bring in Ashley Congdon as junior Ashley Cecil tripled over the centerfielder’s head bringing in Jesse Rouse and Annie Voyles, both advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Kristy Ringler. Sophomore Natasha Meyer got into the action as she doubled down the leftfield line bringing in Ashley Cecil.
The victory was a team effort with everyone contributing. Offensively junior Ashley Cecil and sophomore Natasha Meyer both went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Taking the loss for Gannon University was starter Heather Ford. She gave up nine hits and six runs over six innings of work.
Although the Eagles cruised to an easy win in the first game, the second game would be a nail-biter up to the last out. The fifth inning Gannon led off with a walk before Coach Deiros quieted Gannon’s fans by putting game one’s winner Kelly Powe in the game. As Gannon moved the runner to third on two sacrifice bunts, Kelly Powe struck out Allison Gerger to end the inning. Freshman Annie Voyles (2-3) struck out three and had two hits before exiting the game.
Ashley Cecil, Natasha Meyer and Erin Ogden had the only hits for the Eagles as they sneak past Gannon 1-0.
Annie Voyles (3-3) picks up her third win of the season as Kelly Powe (2) picks up the save. The Eagles improved to 10-10 as Gannon University fell to 2-3 of the season.
