FGCU Softball Sweeps Pair from Eckerd College

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a South Region doubleheader from Eckerd College at the FGCU Softball Complex, 9-1 in five innings and 8-5.
The Eagles even their record at 5-5 while the Tritons fall to 2-8.
FGCU jumped out early in the opener, scoring four runs in the first inning on a two-run double by junior Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) and a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL). The Eagles added five runs on six hits in the fifth, keyed by a two-run double by Rouse.
Rouse finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Lauren Donnelly (Jacksonville, FL) went 2-for-2 and senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL) 2-for-4 for FGCU.
Senior Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) improved her record to 3-3 with a complete game four-hitter.
FGCU pounded out eight runs on 10 hits to win the nightcap. The Eagles scored in each of the first five innings and held off a late charge by the Tritons. Cecil was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases to spark the offense. Senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres) and junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) added two hits each.
Powe (4-3), the fourth Eagles pitcher, picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Eagles travel to Valdosta State for a three-day, five-game tournament beginning Friday against West Florida.
