FGCU Softball Blanks Fort Valley State Twice
FORT VALLEY, GA – Florida Gulf Coast University softball pitchers allowed only two hits and no runs Monday afternoon as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from Fort Valley State University, 10-0 and 11-0, at Wildcat Field.
The victories marked the 100th career win for head coach Dave Deiros and the softball program at FGCU, a significant milestone for a progam in just its third year of intercollegiae competition.
Senior Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) threw five shutout innings in the first game with eight strikeouts to improve to 20-5, her second straight season with at least 20 wins in the pitching circle.
The Eagles got all the runs they would need in the first on RBI base hits from senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.), sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers) and sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.). FGCU went up 4-0 on a home run by Toleman to lead off the fourth and added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth for its 10th shutout win of the season.
Eight different players had at least one hit for FGCU, which had 15 hits in the game. Both Toleman and Fishburn each went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Rouse, junior Natasha Meyer, and freshman Hillary Johnson added two hits apiece.
FGCU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings of the nightcap. Meyer went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI and Fishburn went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI to key the Eagles. Johnson went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, Ill.) threw a five-inning complete game, allowing just a single in the second inning while striking out seven without giving up a walk to improve her record to 6-5.
The two-game sweep improves FGCU’s record to 26-14. Fort Valley State falls to 11-18.
The Eagles play a doubleheader at Clark Atlanta tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
