Saturday, April 09, 2005
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Florida Gulf Coast University and the #11 University of Alabama at Huntsville split a NCAA Division II South Region softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon, with the Eagles winning the opener 5-1 before the Chargers rallied to win the nightcap 6-3. FGCU senior Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in a complete game victory in the opener to improve her record to 23-5, setting a new FGCU single season record for wins. The Eagles scored their first run in the first on a catcher’s interference call with the bases loaded. They made it 2-0 in the second on a RBI single by senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) to score senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.). UAH reached Powe for two hits and a run in the second to make it 2-1. FGCU added a run in the sixth on a RBI single by junior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) and two more runs in the seventh on a passed ball and a RBI double by freshman Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers). Sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers) and junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla.) had two hits each for FGCU. UAH rallied twice in the nightcap and went on to the 6-3 win. With FGCU leading on the strength of a Fishburn solo homer, her second of the year, and a RBI double by Beck in the second, the Chargers scored two runs off Powe in the fifth for a 2-2 tie. The Eagles went back on top 3-2 in the sixth on a solo home run to left field by Toleman, her fourth of the year. Aided by two fielding errors, UAH also had four base hits that led to four runs in the sixth for the 6-3 comeback win. Powe (23-6), making her sixth appearance in three days, pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and six runs, four of which were earned, and striking out five. Johnson had two of the Eagles six hits in the game off three UAH pitchers. Lindsey Skinner (14-7) gave up just one run over the final 4.2 innings for the win. FGCU (32-16) travels to Eckerd College on Friday, April 15 for a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
