FGCU Softball Sweeps past Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team swept a doubleheader from Palm Beach Atlantic University, 5-1 and 9-0 in five innings, Saturday night at Mary Brandon Park. In game one, the Eagles scored four times in the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 tie. Senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.) hit a one-out infield single to get the inning rolling. Junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla.) followed with a single to right center and then took second as Cecil slid safely into third base. Senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) singled up the middle and took second on the throw to third base, scoring Cecil. Sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers, Fla.) socked a two-run triple, her second triple of the day, down the right field line to cap the scoring. Meyer went 3-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Eagles. Cecil added a pair of singles and scored a run, while Toleman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fishburn had two triples and three RBI and a run scored. The top three hitters for FGCU went 7-for-12 with four runs scored and an RBI. Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) went the distance, scattering four hits and fanning eight to improve to 26-6. Senior catcher Jen Kleier went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for PBA. Senior pitcher Melissa Cundiff took the loss, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs to fall to 9-10. In game two, FGCU (36-16) plated four runs in the first inning and did not look back in a 9-0 victory. Cecil went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Toleman went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI while sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 1-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored. Junior pitcher Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, Ill.) tossed a five-inning, two-hit shutout to improve to 9-6. Megan Wackes and Melissa Wallach had base hits for PBA (28-22-2). Kim Boardman took the loss, going all five innings, allowing 11 hits and eight earned runs to drop to 13-8. FGCU, ranked ninth in the latest Division II south region poll, hosts Nova Southeastern in a key regional doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
