Cecil Named Division II Third-Team Softball All-American
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The parade of post-season honors continues for Florida Gulf Coast University softball player Ashley Cecil. The Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Cecil to the 2005 All-America third team on Wednesday. The All-America teams were announced prior to the start of the NCAA Division II National Championships in Alexandria, Virginia. Cecil is the first FGCU softball player to earn All-America recognition.
Cecil (Naples, Fla.), who was also chosen first-team Division II All-South Region and second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District earlier this month, helped lead the Eagles to a 38-18 record this season. The senior center fielder started all 56 games and led FGCU in six offensive categories, including batting average (.408), on-base percentage (.493), runs (57), hits (73), walks (27) and stolen bases (66). She was also the NCAA Division II leader in stolen bases with 66, including six stolen bases in a single-game to tie an 11-year old NCAA Division II record. Cecil also ranked 37th nationally in runs scored and 50th in batting average.
She holds single season and career records at FGCU in batting average, runs, hits and stolen bases.
Cecil, who has been accepted into the Physical Therapy graduate program in FGCU’s College of Health Professions, will serve as a graduate assistant coach with the Eagles in 2006.
