Softball to Host Four-Team Invite This Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s softball team will host a four-team invitational this weekend, Feb. 24-26, at the FGCU Softball Complex. Participating teams include sixth-ranked LeMoyne College from New York, Mercyhurst College from Pennsylvania and Palm Beach Atlantic. It will be the first games of the season for LeMoyne and Mercyhurst. PBA enters the weekend with a 4-8 record while FGCU is 6-3 after winning two of three games in the rain-shortened West Georgia tournament last weekend. PBA and FGCU had their season-opening doubleheader rained out on February 3. The Eagles come into the invitational hitting .243 as a team. Junior leftfielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) is off to a torrid start for FGCU. She is hitting a team-best .481 with three home runs and 11 RBI, also team-highs. Senior shortstop Christine Beck is second on team in hits behind Rouse and is batting .306 through 11 games. Junior centerfielder Rachel Holman (Vero Beach, Fla.) and freshamn Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) have each stolen four bases. A young pitching staff has been outstanding through 11 games, recording a 1.71 team ERA. Junior transfer Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Ill.) is a perfect 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA and one save. Sophomore transfer Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) is 3-2 in the circle with a 1.85 ERA while freshman Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, Fla.) is 2-1 with one save and a 2.38 ERA.
