Geissler Leads Eagles In 7-0 Win In Day Two of FGCU Tournament

FORT MYERS,Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team played their fourth game of the FGCU Spring Break tournament versus Saginaw Valley State University. The Eagles defeated the Cardinals 7-0 with a up and coming freshman leading at the mound. Pitching for the Eagles tonight was Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, FL). Geissler (5-2) allowed three hits and no errors with three strikeouts. She has now thrown 46 innings this season with an ERA of 1.65 and is second on the team in strikeouts with 29. This was the first meeting between the two teams this season and first on the boards were the Eagles with a 2-0 lead in inning two. Junior Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, FL) hit a line drive single to left field. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, IL) followed with a double to right-center field. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, FL) then tripled a line drive to center to bring home Johnson and Backe. In the top of the third inning junior out-fielder Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, FL) singled and advanced to second on an error. Junior left fielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) singled putting two runners on base. Senior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) scored Homan with a RBI groundout. Hillary Johnson followed with a double to right center scoring Rouse, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead. In the fourth inning the Eagles once again scored two with Natasha Johnson leading off with a double to left field. Johnson stole third and was brought home by sophomore catcher Lauren Barraco’s (Fort Myers, FL) single to left-center. Rouse hit a double to center-field and brought home Barraco. The Eagles scored one more run in the sixth inning and held off the Cardinals with a nice line drive catch in the seventh by center-fielder Homan and another by left out-fielder Rouse to end the game. Rouse led the Eagles at bat going three for four with an RBI. Natasha Johnson was two out of three at bat with two collected RBI's versus the Cardinals. The Eagles end day two of the FGCU tournament 19-4 and play Saginaw Valley State University (MI) again tomorrow at 2:00 pm and Grand Valley State University (MI) at 6:00 pm at the FGCU Softball Complex.
