Softball Team Knocks Off Gannon

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team defeated Gannon University 4-2 Friday in the opening game of day two of the 2006 Spring Break Invitational at the FGCU Softball Complex.
FGCU (18-4) has now won 14 of its last 15 games after winning two of three against Gannon in the tournament. The Golden Knights fall to 9-2.
Sophomore Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) won her sixth consecutive start, scattering six hits in the complete-game victory. Edinger (8-2) allowed two unearned runs in the seventh to spoil the shutout. She recorded six strikeouts and walked just one.
FGCU put the pressure on Gannon early, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first. Junior left fielder Jessica Rouse doubled home freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) with the first run and scored on a long single to right field by sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.). The Eagles added a pair of runs in the third inning on a throwing error by center fielder Kristina Damis and a two-out RBI double by sophomore Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.).
Rouse went 2-for3 with two runs scored to pace an eight-hit attack for FGCU. She now has seven multiple hit games for the Eagles.
Gannon was paced by Allison Gerger’s 2-for-2 effort. Starter Lauren Soldner took her second loss in as many days against FGCU in the circle to fall to 3-2 overall.
FGCU will face Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) University in the final game Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
