Eagles Claim Victory Over Lakers 11-0
Fort Myers, Fla.- The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team ended day four of the FGCU Spring Break Tournament versus Grand Valley State University. The Eagles defeated the Lakers in a shut-out 11-0.
The Eagles started right out of the gate scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Junior outfielder Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, FL) led off for the Eagles hitting a single to left field. Homan breezed past the Lakers and successfully stole second. Freshman third baseman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, FL) was next up to bat and she was walked. Junior out-fielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) singled to center field allowing Homan to make it home and Jenks to reach second. The two Eagles on base Rouse and Jenks both stretched out to steal one base each. Now with Jenks on third and Rouse on second senior shortstop Christine (Beck Hudson, FL) reached on a fielder's choice and made it to second on the throw to bring home Jenks. Freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, FL) help the Eagles score two more runs to make the game 4-0 by singling to center field scoring Rouse and Beck.
In the fourth and fifth inning the Eagles scored a pair of runs. In the fourth junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, FL) doubled to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Johnson was brought home by sophomore second baseman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL) on a single to right field. In the fifth Hillary Johnson hit a homerun for the lone run of the inning.
In the top of the seventh the Eagles sealed the deal rallying five runs for the inning finishing 7-0. Hillary Johnson landed on first base from a walk by the Lakers pitcher. Sophomore Christa Piquette (Barrington, RI) came in for Johnson as a pinch runner for the Eagles. Beck made it on base from a single and junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, IL) hit a single to load the bases. Natasha Johnson was walked with the bases loaded scoring Piquette. Boyd also was walked earning another run with bases loaded bringing Beck home. Next at bat was sophomore catcher Lauren Barraco (North Fort Myers, FL) who singled as well bringing home Backe for the third run of the inning. Jenks scored the last two runs for the Eagles hitting a single to left field which brought home Boyd and Natasha Johnson.
Winning pitcher for the Eagles was freshman Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, FL) who currently has a record of (6-2). Geissler pitched six innings with three strikeouts, four hits, no runs and a walk.
The Eagles are now 21-4 and will take on Saginaw Valley State University tomorrow to start day four of tournament play. Tomorrow evening the Eagles will compete again versus Grand Valley State University Lakers. The Eagles overall tournament record stands at (5-1).
