FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 17th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles Softball team swept a double header over Post University Wednesday evening. With the two wins the Eagles improve to 31-4 on the season and have now won 14 straight games. Post falls to 1-5. In the first game junior Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, FL) threw a one-hit shutout as the Eagles cruised to an 8-0 victory. Post University’s Shannon Firetto stepped up in the top of the fifth inning as the potential last out. She broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle of the infield. The Eagles came out swinging in the second inning as freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, FL) started out with an infield single. McDowell then stole second base with junior Roz Tyre (Lake City, FL) at the plate. On the next pitch McDowell advanced to third on a passed ball. Tyre walked and then junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, FL) hit an RBI single scoring McDowell from third. An error on Post’s left fielder also scored Tyre. With no outs in the inning sophomore second baseman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL) reached base on an error by the shortstop. The error scored Johnson giving the Eagles a three run second inning. LeeAnne McDowell continued her hot hitting with a home run to center field in the bottom of the third inning, her second of the season. With the score now 4-0 in the Eagles favor and Rachael Edinger pitching near perfectly, FGCU continued to cruise through the game. Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) set an Eagles single season home run record with a bomb over the center field wall in the fourth inning. She now has seven home runs on the year. McDowell and Johnson both went 2-for-2 in the game each having a run batted in. The second game didn’t fair any better for Post University. FGCU scored in double digits for the fourth time this year for a 14-1 mercy win. The Eagles started out where they left off in the first game scoring four runs in the first inning. Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, FL) walked to start things out for FGCU. The Eagles lone senior, Christine Beck, (Hudson, FL) singled up the middle putting two runners on. The designated player, sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, FL) hit a single to right field scoring both Beck and Jenks. McDowell singled and Natasha Johnson drew a walk. With two more runners on, Boyd scored McDowell and Johnson with a hard hit grounder to center field. McDowell added a long homer to center field in the second inning. The Eagles sailed through the rest of the game as Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) got the win, throwing a complete game to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the year. Beck went 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Hillary Johnson also added 4 RBI. The Eagles are in action again Friday against St. Michael’s College (VT) in double header action. The first pitch will be thrown out at 5:00 pm.
